Welcome to the PE Department. At City of Portsmouth Boys’ School we aim to stimulate and challenge students of all ages and abilities by providing a wide and inclusive range of sporting activities.
All students in Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 follow the National Curriculum in Physical Education, which aims to develop not only competence in a range of physical activities but to develop creative, cognitive and social skills, all essential across the curriculum.
Regularly participating in PE is also more commonly known to boost confidence and self esteem, encouraging teamwork, whilst at the same time providing opportunities for students to be creative, competitive and to face up to different challenges as individuals and in teams.
Our department aims are as follows: To provide a broad and well balanced programme of physical education with opportunities to develop a good basic level of skill in a wide range of activities. To encourage all pupils to develop a positive attitude towards sport and exercise. To enable our young people to develop skills of leadership and create opportunities for them to become successful leaders in the community. To enable pupils to make choices about their involvement in healthy physical activity and diet.
At present the curriculum is organised so that in KS3 pupils receive 2 hours of PE per week.
The pupils follow a broad and balanced curriculum in order to fulfil the national curriculum requirements of Outwitting opponents, accurately replication of actions, Exploring and Communicating Ideas, Concepts and Emotions and identifying and solving problems, exercising safely and effectively.
They participate in the following activities football, rugby, table tennis, basketball, gymnastics, trampolining, yoursport, cricket, tennis, softball, athletics and gymnastics.
At KS4 pupils take a more specialised route studying fewer activity areas in greater depth. Pupils get 2 hours of core PE lessons per week. There is an emphasis on getting everyone active and involved in a selection of engaging sports or activities.
In year 11 the Sports Leaders course is offered to pupils. The course is six months long and focuses on developing leadership skills.
In year 11 pupils are given options of which activities to follow. Close links with the community have been developed to offer an excellent offsite options programme. Some of the activities on offer to pupils are: football at Roko, swimming at Mountbatten, orienteering in Queen Elizabeth country Park, and sailing at Portsmouth outdoor education Centre.
The course builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills established in Key Stage 3 Physical Education. It gives pupils the opportunity to be involved in a number of physical activities in the roles of participant, leaders and officials.
Pupils will: Develop their knowledge and practical skills in a range of physical activitiesExamine the effects of exercise and how training can improve performanceFind ways to improve their own performance in a variety of rolesIdentify ways to develop and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle through participation in physical activityAppreciate the benefits of promoting ‘sport for all’
The GCSE course is made up of two units: unit 1 is the theoretical aspect of physical education, and unit 2 is the practical and performance aspect.
Students will learn about: Health and skill related exerciseThe effect of exercise on health, fitness and performanceThe importance of diet, work and rest in relation to physical activity and a healthy lifestylePhysical and mental health The impact of physical activity and exercise on cardiovascular, respiratory, muscular and skeletal systems (over short and long term)How lifestyle choices (exercise, diet, rest and drugs) affect the mind and body
Unit 2: Practical aspect
