We are a department of five science specialist teachers. All aspects of science are studied by every student from year 7 – 11. As a department, we strive to ensure that students enjoy a relevant curriculum that motivates their learning and interest in the subject.
Through the use of modern technologies such as data loggers, digital microscopes and interactive modelling, as well as conventional techniques, students are given the opportunity to research and develop their own understandings of science and the world around them. We believe that an important part of becoming a lifelong learner is independence. That's why we encourage our pupils to find out things for themselves.

All students in key stage 3 follow a practically-based course that is adapted and matched to the attainment targets of the Science National Curriculum. Students work through a varied curriculum covering all the relevant sciences and are offered a range of learning experiences including practical investigation, research and experience in the wider world.
In their first 2 years of study, students are streamed into combined year 7 and 8 classes to ensure that the curriculum is appropriate for their current level. All classes follow the same program of study and are given opportunities to progress quickly to the next level.
Year 9 students are set within classes of like ability. We believe this gives students the confidence to strive to reach their best. All classes follow the same curriculum, ensuring inclusion across the entire year group.
Homework tasks are set on the schools VLE and it is expected that pupils will spend up to 30 minutes each week completing these tasks. They are extended pieces of work looking at ‘How Science Works’ and are expected to be completed over a six week period.

Day trips and residential courses are regularly organised for the students to ensure a deeper understanding of science in our everyday lives. These additional experiences, we find, encourages students to explore science to greater understanding and further motivates their study.
Students in Year 10 and 11 follow the GCSE Edexcel Science and Additional Science courses, which leads to two separate GCSE grades. These courses offer students a variety of experiences across the three science curriculum areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and encourages an appreciation of what science can teach students about themselves, the environment and the universe. For those who would like to take science to an even greater depth there is also the option of taking triple science which leads to three separate GCSE grades in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
Students are assessed both internally, through practical investigations and research, and externally, through unit exams, offering students a chance to excel in both areas. Students are offered the chance to be entered for either a Foundation or Higher Tier exam ensuring students can achieve their best. These assessments are sat in November, March and June.
Upper school homework is set weekly and can be up to an hour in duration. This work complements classwork and is used as a revision aid for their GCSE’s.
