Making the transition to cpbs

Here are some of our current Year 7 boys who left Lyndhurst Junior School last year, telling you about their experience of The City of Portsmouth Boys' School...

“I’ve made lots of friends at City Boys". There are lots of sports clubs after school and there are really good facilities in Tech and ICT. I also really enjoy Art. I am a member of the School Council and we meet every two weeks and you get to actually have a say in the running of the school as well as enjoying the Dominos Pizza! I really look forward to going to school.”

“Moving to Secondary School is nerve wracking but the pupils at City Boys’ are really welcoming. I like Technology and PE because they are fun and have lots of equipment I enjoy using in my learning. There are also lots of after school clubs. If you are stuck in your lessons there is always lots of help from other pupils and staff. I am a member of the School Council and we talk about all sorts of issues and have workshops.”

“It’s really fun at City Boys’. Maths has got it’s own building and I enjoy maths because it’s fun and I really like my teacher. I have just won the Year 7 ‘Spellathon’ which was really good and we have lots of inter-tutor competitions. Even if you lose, it’s still fun to take part. There are lots of trips and I had such a good time at the Portsmouth Outdoor Centre with my tutor group building carts and rafts.”

“I enjoy Social Studies as in Year 7 it’s always the first lesson of the day and you do different things like History and RE. At the moment we are doing Geography studying Italy which is really interesting. Year 7s also have their own play area which is a full size wooden ship and really cool. There are lots of lunch time clubs like ICT, PE, Art and after school clubs that I have joined. You can earn lots of rewards for good work and at the end of term you can get a voucher or enjoy a film and burgers on rewards day.”

“When you first come it’s quite scary as Junior School is quite small but if you get lost, there’s always an older pupil and teachers to help you. On Tuesday mornings Year 10 and 11 mentors come to tutor to talk to us and see if we have any problems they can help with. I have really improved in my reading. The teachers have lots of time to help me with my learning. We also learn French and Spanish and some of our class are going to France and Spain this year to use our language skills. There are lots of rewards given out on a weekly basis for best dressed, best attendance and star of the week as well as certificates and commendations for the ‘accelerated reader’ project.”

“I really like ICT, PE and Science. PE is very active and we play lots of active sports that we haven’t tried before. In Science I really like doing the practicals as you get to do real experiments with Bunsen burners and chemicals. The older pupils here are quite friendly and I knew some of them as my older brother went to City Boys’. I also enjoy playing on ‘the ship’ at break time which is only for Year 7s.
